Procedure Highlight: Rhinoplasty

What is a Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a nose job, is a surgical procedure performed to reshape or resize the nose. This surgery helps provide symmetry and proportion to the face, and can improve the functionality of the nose overall. It is one of the most intricate cosmetic procedures, as it requires a keen eye for detail and deep understanding of facial aesthetics.

Difference between Open vs Closed Rhinoplasty

There are two approaches when it comes to a rhinoplasty - open and closed. Open rhinoplasty is a surgical technique where a surgeon creates a small incision on the columella, the narrow strip of tissue on the tip of the nose, right between the nostrils. This provides the surgeon excellent visibility and access to the underlying nasal structures and allows them to modify as needed. An open rhinoplasty is generally recommended for patients who have more complex nasal concerns, and are looking to adjust and refine the tip of their nose.

Closed rhinoplasty on the other hand is a technique more suitable to treat patients with less complex nasal concerns, like a nasal hump or curve. The incision is made on the inside of the nostrils, leaving no visible external scars. While a closed rhinoplasty offers limited visibility, it typically results in a quicker recovery and less postoperative swelling compared to that of an open rhinoplasty.

The Rhinoplasty Process - Expectations & Post Op Care

Before undergoing rhinoplasty surgery, patients will have an initial consultation with their plastic surgeon to discuss their goals and expectations. During this consultation, the surgeon will evaluate the patient's facial features, nasal structure, and determine the most appropriate surgical approach.

The surgery itself typically lasts between one to three hours depending on the complexity of the case. Following the rhinoplasty, patients can expect some degree of bruising, swelling and discomfort around the nose and eyes. A splint will be worn for about one week post surgery to help protect and maintain the new shape. After 1 week, the splint is removed and patients are able to finally see the initial results of the procedure.

It is important to note that while the initial swelling subsides within a few weeks, it may take several months for the final results of the procedure to become apparent. It is essential for patients to have realistic expectations and understand that the nose will continue to refine and settle over time.

Non-Surgical Options

If you are not quite ready for surgery, a non-surgical rhinoplasty may be an option for you. Also known as a liquid nose job, this procedure is performed using the same hyaluronic dermal fillers that surgeons use in the cheeks and lips. By injecting fillers into the nose, a surgeon can help correct nasal curves and humps and contour the nose, further enhancing the symmetry of the face.

While liquid nose jobs can be effective, they are not permanent and may not be the best approach for everyone. You should consult your plastic surgeon to talk through your personal aesthetic goals and what the right treatment plan is for you.
